Meet our At Home Superheroes competition winners!

Wow, we were inundated by super entries to become an Everyday Superhero Team Captain for this summer’s At Home event! Thank you, Superheroes! After much deliberation, we’re delighted to reveal our AWESOME winners, who will be leading our four SUPER TEAMS of explorers, each with its own Marvel theme, to some of the most iconic destinations around the world. (Virtually, of course!)

Owen’s SUPER Story:

Meet Owen, an amazingly determined Superhero who has participated in every Superhero event to date. His life took a transformative turn when a SUPER charity gave him a wheelchair, unlocking a world of sports & endless possibilities. This boosted Owen to become SUPER determined to fundraise for other Superheroes, ensuring they can access the same life-changing opportunities he received. Owen has three extremely rare syndromes, but with his determined spirit he never allows them to dampen his infectious smile or hinder his pursuit for fun. As a former Captain in last year's At Home Superhero Series powered by Marvel, Owen relished the experience & eagerly anticipates the chance to lead & inspire once more.

From: London, but her heart will always belong to Scotland

Andi’s SUPER Story:

Andi is a Superhero in every way. She has been a key member of the Superhero Series family from the start, setting an example of how to be SUPER to all. Diagnosed with hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), POTS, chronic fatigue, & endometriosis, she fearlessly takes on new challenges. Andi's unwavering commitment shines through as she takes part in every event.

Andi's exceptional qualities earned her the position of Everyday Superhero Team Captain during the At Home - Superheroes Series in 2022. She has since dedicated herself to honing her social media skills, aiming to inspire participants & encourage their involvement.

Andi's unwavering support for the Superhero Series is highlighted by proudly wearing her Superhero Series t-shirts wherever she goes. Her enthusiasm & passion are contagious, thereby making her the perfect leader for her Superhero team.

Superhero Captain: Steve

Earth Years: 54

From: Northampton

Steve’s SUPER Story:

More than 27 years ago, Steve's life took a dramatic turn when an accident left him with a fractured spine, causing permanent damage to his spinal cord. He is now paralysed from the waist down & a full time wheelchair user. Following an extensive four-month rehabilitation at the esteemed Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Unit in Glasgow, he returned home ready to embrace his new life.

Driven by an insane thirst for new experiences, Steve found himself invited to a wheelchair rugby taster session organised by the Northampton Saints Rugby Club. From that very first day, he discovered a profound joy in sport. Despite its physical challenges, Steve found support in the specially designed rugby wheelchair, which provided both protection & freedom. As a committed member of the Northampton Saints Wheelchair Rugby team, he was able to participate fully, rising above his back pain. Steve's relentless pursuit of personal growth is further strengthened by his unwavering belief in the power of teamwork. These remarkable qualities make him the perfect candidate for the role of a SUPERHERO team captain.

Team Captain America

Superhero Captain: Emer

Earth Years: 38

From: London

Emer’s SUPER Story:

Emer was born with Dislocation of Hips (CDH). Emer embarked on a journey of treatments, ranging from harnesses to casts & has had multiple surgeries over the years. She had a total hip replacement in 2006 at the age of 21.

It was after surgery in 2015 that Emer discovered a passion for running. While experiencing intermittent breaks due to pain & further surgeries, Emer has been back to running for over two years, successfully completing the At Home Superhero powered by Marvel challenge in 2021. She completed her first Half Marathon on 2nd April, in a time of 2 hours, & 29 minutes. Undeterred, Emer plans to participate in a 15km mountain run in Ireland, as well as the Great North Run in Newcastle. Lifted by the success of the initial Half Marathon, Emer is inspired to set her sights on a full Marathon in 2024.
